Inappropriate Reviews

For this edition of our Review Site Series, we would like to focus on the ease of removing an inappropriate review.

Typically, business owners have the ability to flag a review as inappropriate, but we wanted to focus more on what steps are needed to physically have the review removed. Does it simply take flagging the review to have it removed? Or does a business owner need to further contact the review site directly to have it removed?

We feel that it is important for a review site to make it easy for a business owner to have a review removed. Many times, reviewers have the opportunity to write slanderous reviews about a business that may stay up for a long enough period to hurt the business’s bottom line. And in some cases, the review never gets removed. (And according to this Harvard Business School Study by Michael Luca, “a one-star increase in Yelp rating
leads to a 5-9 percent increase in revenue”.)

What do you think? Do you think it’s important for a review site to make it easy for business owners to have inappropriate reviews removed? Why? Let us know in the comments below!
